              AMANDA IRA ALDRIDGE.

extending over thirty years. In 1852 he visited Germany, and
for three years. delighted German audiences; in 1857 the King
of Sweden invited him to Stockholm and bestowed upon him
special honor. At this period his rank as a tragedian was very
high and the honors showered upon him were most flattering.
The King of Prussia presented him a medal of arts and
sciences of the first class; the Emperor of Austria gave him the
Grand Cross of Leopold, the Emperor of Russia bestowed
upon him a medal; the city of Berne gave him a magnificent
Maltese cress with medal of merit.  He was made a member
