9th La. Vols. A.D.
May 23, 1863
I again seat myself to inform you that I am well. For several
days ther has been a terrible battle raging at Vicksburgh
cannonading was kept up both night and day but this morning all
seems quiet no doubt the place has surrendered. The last
accounts were favorable and that we had already captured between
9000 & 10,000 prisoners and 74 pieces of cannon.
We no doubt suffered a defeat about the first of May in the east.
Hookers army was repulsed and recrossed the Rapahannock. Jackson
the capital of Miss is in ruins our boys it seems loaded
themselves with luxuries & then razed it to the ground. It is
said that some (Yankees) as we call ourselves had 500 to 700
dollars in cash captured at Jackson. I have no confidence in the
mails. I will be brief. No more God bless you. I rec'd a
letter dated Apl 23 from you
