Ohio Writers' Program Photograph Collection

The Works Progress Administration was established on May 6, 1935. A prime objective of the WPA was to create public works jobs for the increasing number of unemployed Americans on Government relief rolls.

Incorporated into the WPA in the summer of 1935 was the Federal Writers' Project. One of the primary goals of the FWP was the completion of the American Guide Series, a compilation of guide books to each state. The Ohio State Director, James G. Dunton, was appointed in November of 1935. He divided the state into 16 districts with smaller offices in almost every county.

The Ohio Writers' Program Photograph Collection P193 consists of Photographs collected for use in the Ohio Guide. A majority of the photographs cover the period 1935-1943, but some date from the 1920's and a number are photocopies of earlier photographs.

Wilberforce University near Xenia in Greene County, Ohio was incorporated in August 1856, as an institution of higher learning solely for Afro-American Students.

Oberlin College in Russia Township, Lorain County, Ohio opened in December 1833 and was charted in February 1834. The College's trustees agreed to permit the free discussion of slavery and to admit Afro-Americans and women. Oberlin was the first school to adopt coeducation on the college level.
