Ohio Writers' Program Photograph CollectionThe Works Progress Administration was established on May 6, 1935. A prime objective of the WPA was to create public works jobs for the increasing number of unemployed Americans on Government relief rolls. Incorporated into the WPA in the summer of 1935 was the Federal Writers' Project. One of the primary goals of the FWP was the completion of the American Guide Series, a compilation of guide books to each state. The Ohio State Director, James G. Dunton, was appointed in November of 1935. He divided the state into 16 districts with smaller offices in almost every county. The Ohio Writers' Program Photograph Collection P193 consists of Photographs collected for use in the Ohio Guide. A majority of the photographs cover the period 1935-1943, but some date from the 1920's and a number are photocopies of earlier photographs.
