influences of alcohol, the known terror of the human fam-
ily. With these things before use, can the pulpit do other-
wise than preach and labor against the curse of strong
drink until the thing is driven from the earth, and the hu-
man forces liberated and given a full chance to bless a
struggling race.

THE STATE OF THE COUNTRY
To the Bishop and Conference:
The Committee on the State of the Country respectfully
present the following report:
The occasion at which we have once more arrived, and
the duty which we must again perform are charged with
solemn reflections as well as with grateful interest, we
would therefore be cheerful without lightness, serious
without gloom, hopeful without opinionated forecasting or
swaggering boast. We do solemnly avow the divine su-
premacy of the God of the universe, by whose guilding
hand our country has come through another year of mo-
mentous test. "Who would not fear thee, O King of na-
tions? For to thee doth it appertain; for as much as among
all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms,
there is none like unto thee."
A State of War
At our last report the war-drums of the nation had
scarcely begun their ominous throbbing. Our Star Spangled
Banner had scarcely begun to flutter and wave in dignified
acceptance of the repeated war-challence of the Titan of
the nations. Germany had defiantly thrown her martial
gauntlet again and again. At last we seized it, and now
