Bishop Allen's 149th Natal Anniversary at Bethel Church, Philadelphia
			
        BISHOP ALLEN'S 149TH NATAL ANNIVERSARY AT
             BETHEL CHURCH, PHILADELPHIA.


   Each   recurrence of this festival finds Bethel Church do-
ing honor to the memory of the man, who was, not only in
the forefront of the movement in the birth  of  African
Methodism, but whose catholicity was seen in whatever
else concerned his kind. Coincidental with that, was the
seventy-third anniversary of Bethel Sunday School. The
occasion was marked by the presence of delegations from
nearly all of the Sunday Schools, in and about Philadelphia,
as well as from St. Thomas' Protestant Episcopal Sunday
School. The reason for that is obvious, because of the in-
esparableness of Rev. Absalom Jones and Rev. Richard Al-
len. Whenever this anniversary is marked, there is always
something to spring up, in connecion with the organizer
and promoter of one of the greatest machines of uplift
the colored people have ever had. The venerable and learned
Bishop Tanner was the central figure at this jubilee,
flanked by Rev. Dr. Thornton, the pastor, Mr. D. Jones Ma-
son,  he superintendent of the Sunday School, and Mr.
George Cambridge, who is about to celebrate his silver anni-
vesary as organist of this, "The Mother" Church.  Bishop
Allens tomb was covered   with  flowers, ferns and palms;
and additional feature was the presence of Miss Kathe-
  rine Hall and Mr. Carlyn Taylor Hall, great, great grand
children of the first Bishop. The surprise came in the read-
ing and exhibtion of Bishop Allen's will.  A copy follows
this caption, which will not only be of interest to those of
his own communion, but to every one whose race pride is
strong, and who realizes he, the Bishop, was among the
