                  AND ILLUSTRATIONS


A Department For Illustrations And Original Outlines of Sermons
               to Which All Are Invited to Contribute.

  In this New Department in the Review, we desire to say that much of
its value and helpfulness will come from the cooperation of clergymen and
trained laymen who will send in skeletons and analyses of Scriptural passages
and illustrations, either original or selected, which will throw light on some
moral or religious truth.
  We earnestly request our readers to keep an eye open for bright sparkling
illustrations.  Many things will happen in your own experience, or pass
under your own observation from day to day, which, caught and written,
will clinch and illume the discourse of men inclined to be dry, although
earnest. Send such things in to the Review for this department.
  Again, in your reading, you will often come across striking things which
are not accessible to your brethren. Through this department you can give
them to your brother who needs them.
  It is suggested that where an illustration is borrowed, due credit be given;
if the source is known.
  All skeletons should be original with the sender. The editor has
access to books, but does not desire these frameworks of sermons in print.
We wish both to exercise the gift of our own preachers in preparing syset-
matic outlines and to bring to the less prepared men samples of what the
Negro pulpit of to-day can do and is doing in preparing spiritual food for
the people suited to their needs.
  Above all, let each contribution be short--not over 300 words.
We do not, under any circumstances, want sermons--simply the outlines
and divisions.
  We expect more skeletons than illustrations, because illustrations are
hard to prepare for one's self, hard to find not hackneyed in the use of
others, and, when found, somewhat hard to apply; but that is exactly why
we begin this department--to give skill in their creation and application.
