the result of merely human wisdom.

and irresistible action for ages. Thus,
that which has seemed impossible
with men, has been made possible in
God's own time, and what has been
inexplicable by the finite creature, has been found to
be among the hidings of the power of the Infinite.
Workings of His purpose who made the world.
The recent war between the United States and Spain
must be regarded as among the great events of history
which were not the results of merely human power, but
as the effect of slow but sure elements, which have si-
lently operated for centuries in the political and moral
history of Spain, in her dealings with her colonies;
and which may be said to have reached their cul-
minating point in this struggle. As verily as the
harvest does not immediately follow the seed time,
as the fragrance, and foliage, and fruitfulness of sum-
mer do not instantly appear after the cold and vege-
table desolation of winter, so in the great law of
human progress and development, there must be time
for latent energies to combine and exert their influences
for good or evil. The current must be in harmony with
its source; and in so far as germs and principles are con-
cerned, it is true that the present was in the past, and
the unknown future lies embosomed in the activities of
to-day.
