to generation, will wait, in all good conscience, either the consent of 

their slaves to go, or the opportunity of sending them to Africa.  It 

is impossible to conceive of a better plan to ease the consciences 

of slaveholders.  "The slaves are set free among us", poor creatures 

it worries them."  They won't go to Africa "or they have not the means 

of sending them."  "Surely it is no sin to hold them under such 

circumstances."  Thus men are made to believe that slaveholding 

is a work of benevolence rather than a heinous crime.

     Again, its tendency has been greatly to oppress [crossed out word "unhelp"] the free people 

of color individuals and (people?) have increased their oppression 

in order to make them willing to leave the country.  The op-

pressive laws of Maryland may be presented as evidence of 

this statement.  And the shameful attempt years since to at-

tempt to drive the black people from Ci[ncinnati?] 

is directly in point.  And will not soon be f[orgotten?] by 

the human heart.

     It should also be remembered that the C[olonization] 

Society has tended greatly to keep up and increase pre-

judice against the people of color.  [In the] addresses of its
