Review of the Statement of the Faculty of Lane Seminary in Relation to the Recent Difficulties in that Institution

[been] made, and determine how much sincerity ther[e is in] the

public sentiment to which violence is said to [have] been done.

It was not the attention of the s[tudents] to the colored people, but

the public exciteme[nt oc[casioned by them, that made it neces-

sary to a[void] their society. The faculty convened the students

again and again, and admonished them with regard to the

public excitement, but do they come out affirming your

doctrine and practice are wrong; your intercourse with

the people of color condemned by the word of God and you

ought to repent and acknowledge your fault? No, this they

could not.  [crossed out word "do"]  The first sentence could not be found for this {crossed out word "their"}

position in all the Holy Book. They could [crossed out word "not"] tell them that

it would be "impossible to protect either them or the institution,"

but not a word about their sin. If their conduct had

been criminal could the faculty in good conscience had

given them a dismission as in good standing. It does seem

from the statement of the faculty, that but for the excitement

the students would have been in Lane Seminary yet

pursuing their studies in peace.
