Review of the Statement of the Faculty of Lane Seminary in Relation to the Recent Difficulties in that Institution

In their statement the exc[itement] is brought into view as the urgent 

necessity, a[nd] the sin of the students.  This is fully confirm[ed by] the 

following statement of the faculty.  "T[he ur]gency of this necessity was 

greatly increased [during] their attention to the subject, by another visit 

[to the] Seminary, of a carriage of colored persons.  This [aug]mented 

greatly the public exasperation and [oc]casioned, as the committee 

believed, a necessi[ty of] suspending the Abolition Society in the 

insti[tution."]

      Surely this is a bad beginning in Lane Semina[ry.]  If it 

is to be governed by the excitements of C[incin]nati, and especially [crossed out word "by"] 

excitements so unreason[able] and if the students are to be placed 

under laws [so as] to appease the mob, the church will have 

lit[tle] hope either from its purity or its influence.  [When] it is found 

that it can be governed by city e[xcite]ments it may expect to be fav-

ored with enou[gh of] them.  Better far for the Seminary and the 

ho[nest] religion, the mob had torn the building to the gr[ound.]  

It could have been reared again as a standing m[onu]ment of integrity.

     Another weighty consideration urged upon th[e stu]dent was, 

that the public was divided, and [?] parties had contributed to
