James Monroe Gregory (1849- )

Description:  Print of James Monroe Gregory (1849- ), the Dean of the College Department of Howard University (Washington, D.C.), linguist, and orator. His family moved from Lynchburg, Virginia to Cleveland, Ohio in 1859. Gregory attended public schools, being among the first African-Americans to do so. In 1865, he entered the Prepatory Department of Oberlin College.
