Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback (1837-1921)

Description:  Print of Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback (1837-1921), recruiter of African-American volunteers during the Civil War, newspaper editor, and Republican politician. Pinchback was sent to Cincinnati around 1846 to attend school, worked on canal boats in Ohio and on Mississippi riverboats and made his way to New Orleans. Pinchback was elected to the state senate in Louisiana, and served as Lieutenant Governor and acting Governor of Louisiana.
