Afro-American Small Picture Collection

Photographs of ex-slaves from the Ohio Historical Society - Afro-Americans Small Picture Collection SC1495. These photographs were taken by Works Progress Administration-Federal Writers' Project staff engaged in the interviewing of surviving ex-slaves in Ohio. Most of the Ohio slave narratives were compiled in 1937 and 1938.

The War for the Union." published by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., American and Foreign Steroscopic Emporium, 501 Broadway, New York. Stereoviews are paired images made with a twin-lens camera, producing a three-dimensional illusion when viewed in a device called a stereoscope.

The Ohio Writers' Program Photograph Collection P193 consists of Photographs collected for use in the Ohio Guide. The Works Progress Administration was established on May 6, 1935. A prime objective of the WPA was to create public works jobs for the increasing number of unemployed Americans on Government relief rolls.

Prof. Siebert began collecting UGRR material in 1891. His first publication on the subject was in 1895; his most important, The Underground Railroad From Slavery to Freedom, in 1898 (reissued in 1967); his last, Mysteries of Ohio's Underground Railroad, was published in 1952.

Ben Snowden Small Picture Collection

Photographs from the Ben Snowden Small Picture Collection SC3964. The Snowden Family of Clinton, Knox County, Ohio, was an Afro-American family of musicians who performed banjo and fiddle tunes and sang popular songs for black and white audiences throughout rural central Ohio from the 1850s to the early twentieth century. African-Americans in Knox County have long claimed that Daniel D. Emmett learned the song "Dixie" from the Snowdens.
